The curriculum at De La Salle Senior School is designed to provide a broad and balanced education for boys, where all are given an opportunity to study a wide range of subjects. All students follow a broad, extended and enriched curriculum using the National (Jersey) Curriculum as a base. Through high quality teaching and resources, we aim to provide an inspiring experience to our boys and to encourage in them a love of life-long independent learning. Cultural activity and tours, which includes sport, music and Art are an important part of the curriculum and all boys have extensive opportunities to participate.
The study of Religious Education is central to the curriculum at De La Salle College. Respecting the beliefs of non Catholic boys and the consciences of all, we aim to communicate and share a lively, articulate and critically aware Christian faith. To this end, all boys take public examination courses in Religious Studies, a knowledge and understanding of Catholic belief is supported by all aspects of the curriculum.
At De La Salle we take boys of all abilities. Of 77 students in the cohort, only 27 had the CAT score to have gained entry to Hautlieu or VCJ. That means 65% of our boys would not be accepted into VCJ or Hautlieu. As such our results have a much wider spectrum of ability being shown than the schools we are most often compared to. To allow this comparison to be made we have divided our cohort. The De La Salle SSC (Selective School Comparator) cohort is composed of boys at De La Salle who could have gained entry to Hautlieu at 14+. For the first time I have also included a comparator with the 11-16 schools (11/16SC) which excludes all students who met the criteria to attend Hautlieu. The De La Salle WS (whole school) cohort includes our full ability range, that is students who meet the 14+ entry criteria and those who would not have gained entry to the Island Selective schools. Overall 77% of boys gained 5 A* to C, and 73% gained 5 A*-C including English and Maths. It should also be noted that all of our boys take GCSE’s, often 11-16 schools include BTEC examinations (which have no final exams) as GCSE’s. This has the impact of artificially raising the 5+ A*-C pass grade. This is the final year in which this practise will be allowed.

A Level Results
De La Salle is unusual amongst Sixth Form A level providers because we have lower entrance criteria. we accept boys who do not meet the entry requirements of other sixth forms to study for A levels. To provide a method of comparison I have once again added the Sixth form comparator data below. It should also be noted that we entered boys for the BTEC examinations for the first time last year. These results can no longer be counted as A levels, as they used to be, and so are not included in the above figures. However, the results were excellent, two boys achieving the highest grades possible straight D* (Distinction star), based upon the old formula this would have been equivalent to three A* at A level. Using the same comparator 40% of the grades were A*-A; 70% were A*-C and 100% were A*-E.

The Lower School curriculum is for boys in Years 7 & 8. We offer boys a curriculum of considerable breadth that includes: Art; Music; Mathematics; Physical Education; Swimming; Competitive Team Sports (Games); Religious Studies; English; Library & Reading; History; Geography; French; Information Technology; Science and Design & Technology. At the end of Year 8 boys select the subjects that they will continue to study at GCSE level.
The Upper School curriculum begins at the end of Year 8. All boys take a core curriculum of seven subjects together with five options. All boys study English Language; English Literature; Mathematics, Core & Additional Science; Religious Studies and ICT. They can opt for a further five GCSE subjects from Art; Design and Technology; Music; Sports Science; French; History and Geography. In addition the academically able will join an ‘Express Programme’ which replaces Core & Additional Science with the three sciences taken as separate GCSE subjects and adds GCSE Statistics; Economics and A level Ethics & Philosophy. This broad academic base prepares boys to select from a wide range of A level subjects.
In Years 12 & 13 we offer a programme of AS and A levels in the belief that such a curriculum will best serve the interests of the whole student body, bearing in mind the ability range of our boys. A broad range of subjects are available, mostly delivered at De La Salle but some delivered by our Consortia partners at Victoria College, Jersey; Jersey College for Girls and Beaulieu Convent School. Boys may specialise in a maximum of five AS levels and this normally reduces to three or four at A level. This allows the boys to develop a depth of knowledge which, combined with our enrichment programme, provides a good preparation for University life.
We expect 90% of our A level students to progress to higher education and we aim to prepare them for this, as well as helping them to achieve the grades necessary to gain entry to their chosen University. Advice is also provided to those who choose not to follow this path.
De La Salle College has a fine reputation for its sporting achievements at county, regional and national level and the school takes great pride in offering a broad range of sporting opportunities for all pupils, irrespective of their abilities. The most important aim of our sports programme is to cover the needs of all the boys, giving the opportunity to unlock potential and maximise performance.
This is achieved by providing the time, the best facilities and equipment, expert coaching and a highly competitive internal and external annual fixture programme including our overseas sporting tours.
